The Illiteracy Crisis & Adult Literacy Advocates Solution

Low literacy levels affect people in all segments of society. Individuals pay a devastating personal price through social isolation and a loss of self esteem. The loss of human potential is enormous. In addition, state and national economies suffer. Low levels of literacy threatens society at large, costing billions of dollars each year. Many welfare recipients have few skills that limit them to jobs with low pay and little chance of training or promotion opportunities. Without the fundamental skills to learn, the undereducated are trapped in an unproductive position with little economic hope.

For over 40 years, Adult Literacy Advocates has been serving our community. We offer one-on-one tutoring and small group instruction. Classes currently offered are Adult Basic Literacy, pre-GED and GED.  Planned short courses for summer 2007 include:  Vocabulary, Fractions/Decimals, Writer's Companion, Health Issues, Preparing for the Job, etc.
Newly literate adults become better parents, employees and citizens. Their increased earning power provides a positive influence to their children. With more than 100,000 adults in our community reading at or below the 5th grade level, there is much work to be done.
